Ted Van Dyk, AIA
Ted Van Dyk has lived and worked in Raleigh's District D for the better part of twenty-five years as a student, architect, business owner, and community volunteer.
Ted's education includes:
- B.A. in History from Trinity College, Duke University, 1983
- Masters in Industrial Design, College of Design, North Carolina State University, 1986
- Masters in Architecture and Urban Planning, University of Washington at Seattle, 1992
After gaining valuable experience in both Seattle and Raleigh, Ted founded the architectural firm New City Design Group in 1996. Early projects included preservation, adaptive re-use work, planning new communities, and repositioning of retail and commercial properties. Recent projects include the Saint Mary's School Faculty Housing on Hillsborough Street, Solas in Glenwood South, Fins Restaurant, and North State Banks’ new Headquarters building.
Ted's vision to nurture a commitment to enhancing the quality of Raleigh’s built environment has made New City Design Group an award-winning architectural firm, including multiple Sir Walter Awards for Community Appearance from the City of Raleigh. Its work has also ben featured in Southern Living, Hospitality Design and other national publications. In 2008, Ted was named a 2008 Triangle Architectural and Engineering Impact Leader by Business Leader Magazine. He remains committed to contributing to the enhancement of the Raleigh and Durham communities by serving on the following committees:
- Raleigh Appearance Commission
- Executive Committee, Hillsborough Street Partnership
- Steering Committee, Hillsborough Street Business Improvement District
- Roundtable Committee Chair, Triangle Chapter, Urban Land Institute
In addition, the staff at New City Design Group also supports the following organizations:

Ted and his wife Pam, who holds a doctoral degree in Educational Research from North Carolina State University, reside in the Cameron Park neighborhood with their two high-school aged children. The family enjoys spending time together enjoying the natural beauty of North Carolina.
